Meet the editorial staff: T. Westendorf

Ever ask yourself, ā€œWho are these people who write forĀ Forward in Christ?ā€ Through this series, you can find out.Ā

This month,Ā ForwardĀ in ChristĀ welcomes Timothy Westendorf to the editorial staff as the newestĀ interactiveĀ Bible study contributor.Ā

Westendorfā€™sĀ first Bible study series begins with the end; heĀ is tacklingĀ a 12-part series on the book of Revelation.Ā Ā

ā€œRevelation intrigues some,Ā and intimidates others,ā€ he notes. ā€œButĀ God intends rich comfort to hisĀ church through this book with the message of Jesusā€™ ultimate victory over every enemy.ā€Ā

WestendorfĀ currentlyĀ serves at Abiding Word,Ā Highlands Ranch, Colo.Ā He grew up in WisconsinĀ and is the son of James Westendorf, who served at Christ the Lord, Brookfield, Wis., and, later,Ā as a professor atĀ Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon.Ā Ā

The young WestendorfĀ remembers fondly the kindnessĀ thatĀ he felt from others at his home church.Ā ā€œI was always impressed with how warmly I was embraced by the older people within the church,ā€ he explains. ā€œThey had no reason to care for me other than the fact thatĀ I was their pastorā€™s son andĀ they saw me as a fellow Christian.ā€Ā

He also recalls moments when his young mind didnā€™t quite yet grasp some of the more challenging vocabulary of the liturgy: ā€œI would hear my dad introduce the spoken Psalms with the phrase,Ā ā€˜We will read the versesĀ responsively.ā€™ ButĀ I thought he said ā€˜responsibly.ā€™ IĀ sometimesĀ worried I would accidentally read the wordsĀ ā€˜irresponsibly!ā€™Ā ā€Ā

As he grew, he continued toĀ be inspired byĀ his father and the many teachers, professors, and other leaders he encountered in WELS schools.Ā In his education to become a pastor, he attendedĀ Northwestern Preparatory School (now Luther Preparatory School), Watertown, Wis.,Ā andĀ was partĀ of the first graduating class atĀ Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minn.Ā Afterward, he pursued the ministry at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wis.Ā He lists then-presidentĀ ofĀ NorthwesternĀ CollegeĀ John Braun, DanielĀ Deutschlander, Thomas Nass,Ā Phil Hirsch,Ā and many others asĀ his role models throughout his education.Ā

ā€œI could give you a hundred names,ā€ he notes.Ā

Westendorf is married with four children. His wife, Kelly,Ā has a nursing degreeĀ andĀ worksĀ part-time forĀ Visiting Angels, an in-home elder care service. TheirĀ boysā€”John, 13; Micah, 11; and Benjamin, 8ā€”all enjoy baseball, basketball, and football. Their daughter, Makenna, 6,Ā prefersĀ gymnastics.Ā

When asked what message he has forĀ Forward in ChristĀ readers, WestendorfĀ says, ā€œIt is my prayer that the readers keep their focus on Christ and the full andĀ certainĀ blessings they haveĀ inĀ him.ā€Ā Ā
