            A Time to Yearn for the End - Consider the Chris A Time to Yearn for the End - Consider the Christian man whose body aches from both the cancer and the chemo. Look at that faithful old woman, back arched by time, fingers twisted by arthritis, eyes close to blindness. These believers may pray for death, precisely because they know that for the children of God, death is not the end of life. Death is the end of sorrow and pain. They yearn for the end of those things, and the beginning of their perfect eternity with Jesus. We have come to the end of the Church Year. It is time to talk about the end of this world on Judgment Day. That day does not scare the believer. The first time Christ came he saved us from our sin and the accusations for the devil. The second time Christ comes, he will save us from everything else. On that day, disease, gone. Abuse, gone. Heartache, gone. Even death is ended. None of those things will exist ever again. But we will exist forever with our Lord Jesus. Until then we live in the time in between. As we look at all Christ did at his first coming, we yearn for him to come again to end this broken world and to usher all the saints into everlasting glory.
            We live in an anxious world, a world that is fille We live in an anxious world, a world that is filled with terrors. Wars and rumors of wars, injustice and oppression, violence and degradation, depression and despair, disease, disaster, and death - all these surround us in this broken world and even invade our own lives. There is so much that is out of our control, so much suffering and sadness, so much uncertainty, so much that troubles our hearts. We cry out to you: Lord, have mercy! In mercy, you sent your one and only Son to bear the world’s sin, shed his priceless blood, and win forgiveness for all! In mercy, even in a fallen world, you provide us richly with blessings for body and soul. You care for our bodies, providing all that we need to sustain life, and so much more. In mercy, you richly provide for our souls. You give us your powerful Word and sacraments through which your Spirit works to create and strengthen faith in human hearts. Though we have earned nothing but your anger, you continually shower us with blessings beyond what we can ask for or imagine. Truly, you are a gracious and merciful God! In your Word, you give us these wise instructions: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6). Though we live in a broken, terrifying, and anxious world, we know that you are with us. Sooth our anxious hearts with your promises. Calm our worrying minds with your unshakeable love. Move us by your Spirit to approach your throne of grace with confidence, to bring to you our every care and concern, to offer you prayers and petitions in every situation of life, and to trust that you always hear and answer for our good. On this day of national Thanksgiving, fill our hearts with gratitude for your blessings, praise for your promises, and boldness to declare your saving name before a world that desperately needs the good news of your forgiving love. In Jesus’ name and with thankful hearts, we ask this. Amen.
            A Time for Faithful Service - As we wait for Chris A Time for Faithful Service - As we wait for Christ to return, we are not to be sedentary. The reason Christ has not yet returned is that there is still work to be done. And Christ carries out his good work through us, his Church. So, until Christ comes again and says, “Stop!” believers will be busy with faithful service. Christ has given every believer gifts and talents. And when Christ entrusts us with those gifts and talents, he calls us to use them all for his glory. In the time between Christ’s first and second coming, we use everything the master has given us to live according to his will and to carry out his mission.

Through those who have “kept the watch” on our behalf, you have prevented war from advancing to our shores, frustrated the plans of wicked people, and protected us from harm. Move us to offer our patient, listening hearts to those veterans who suffer, including those who suffer in silence. Help us to point them to the perfect peace that is now theirs in Christ. Move all who fight the good fight of faith, especially those who serve our nation on our behalf, put on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet. Give to all who have served and all who are actively serving, the identity and purpose that comes only from you, that through baptism, they are forgiven, loved children of their heavenly Father, bought and purchased with the blood of his Son, called and kept in the true faith by the Holy Spirit. Amen.
