The Good Samaritan

25Ā Just then, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus, saying, ā€œTeacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?ā€

26Ā ā€œWhat is written in the law?ā€ he asked him. ā€œWhat do you read there?ā€

27Ā He replied, ā€œLove the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; [1] and, love your neighbor as yourself.ā€ [2]

28Ā He said to him, ā€œYou have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.ā€

29Ā But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, ā€œAnd who is my neighbor?ā€

30Ā Jesus replied, ā€œA man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He fell among robbers who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Ā It just so happened that a priest was going down that way. But when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32Ā In the same way, a Levite also happened to go there, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 33Ā A Samaritan, as he traveled, came to where the man was. When he saw him, he felt sorry for the man. 34Ā He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He put him on his own animal, took him to an inn, and took care of him. 35Ā The next day, when he left, he took out two denarii, [3] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ā€˜Take care of him. Whatever extra you spend, I will repay you when I return.’ 36Ā Which of these three do you think acted like a neighbor to the man who fell among robbers?ā€

37Ā ā€œThe one who showed mercy to him,ā€ he replied.

Then Jesus told him, ā€œGo and do likewise.ā€

Mary and Martha

38Ā As they went on their way, Jesus came into a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39Ā She had a sister named Mary, who was sitting at the Lord’s feet and was listening to his word. 40Ā But Martha was distracted with all her serving. She came over and said, ā€œLord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.ā€

41Ā The Lord answered and told her, ā€œMartha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, 42Ā but one thing is needed. In fact, Mary has chosen that better part, which will not be taken away from her.ā€
