John 9
A Blind Man Sees
As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2Ā His disciples asked him, āRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?ā
Ā Jesus answered, āIt was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that Godās works might be revealed in connection with him. 4Ā I [1] must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. 5Ā As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.ā
Ā After saying this, Jesus spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and spread the mud on the manās eyes. 7Ā āGo,ā Jesus told him, āwash in the pool of Siloamā (which means āSentā). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
Ā His neighbors and those who had seen him before this as a beggar asked, āIsnāt this the one who used to sit and beg?ā
Ā Some said, āHe is the one.ā Others said, āNo, but he looks like him.ā He kept saying, āI am the one!ā
Ā So they asked him, āHow were your eyes opened?ā
Ā He answered, āThe man who is called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, āGo to Siloam and wash.ā So I went and washed, and then I could see.ā
Ā āWhere is he?ā they asked.
āI donāt know,ā he said.
Ā They brought this man who had been blind to the Pharisees. 14Ā Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15Ā So the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight.
āHe put mud on my eyes,ā the man told them. āI washed, and now I see.ā
Ā Then some of the Pharisees said, āThis man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath.ā Others were saying, āHow can a sinful man work such miraculous signs?ā
There was division among them, 17Ā so they said to the blind man again, āWhat do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?ā
The man replied, āHe is a prophet.ā
Ā The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and received his sight, until they summoned the parents of the man who had received his sight. 19Ā They asked them, āIs this your son, the one you say was born blind? How is it, then, that he can see now?ā
Ā āWe know that this is our son,ā his parents answered, āand that he was born blind. 21Ā But we do not know how he can see now, or who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough. He will speak for himself.ā 22Ā His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23Ā That is why his parents said, āHe is old enough. Ask him.ā
Ā So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind. They told him, āGive glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.ā
Ā He answered, āI do not know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I see.ā
Ā Then they asked him, āWhat did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?ā
Ā He answered, āI already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You donāt want to become his disciples too, do you?ā
Ā They ridiculed him and said, āYou are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29Ā We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this manāwe do not know where he comes from.ā
Ā āThatās amazing!ā the man answered. āYou do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31Ā We know that God does not listen to sinners. But he does listen to anyone who worships God and does his will. 32Ā From the beginning of time, no one has ever heard of anyone opening the eyes of someone born blind. 33Ā If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.ā
Ā They answered him, āYou were entirely born in sinfulness! Yet you presume to teach us?ā And they threw him out.
Ā Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. When he found him, he asked, āDo you believe in the Son of God?ā [2]
Ā āWho is he, sir,ā the man replied, āthat I may believe in him?ā
Ā Jesus answered, āYou have seen him, and he is the very one who is speaking with you.ā
Ā Then he said, āLord, I believe!ā and he knelt down and worshipped him.
Ā Jesus said, āFor judgment I came into this world, in order that those who do not see will see, and those who do see will become blind.ā
Ā Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked, āWe are not blind too, are we?ā
Ā Jesus told them, āIf you were blind, you would not hold on to sin. But now that you say, āWe see,ā your sin remains.ā
