John 6

41Ā So the Jews started grumbling about him, because he said, ā€œI am the bread that came down from heaven.ā€ 42Ā They asked, ā€œIsnā€™t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? So how can he say, [1] ā€˜I have come down from heavenā€™?ā€

43Ā Jesus answered them, ā€œStop grumbling among yourselves. 44Ā No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the Last Day. 45Ā It is written in the Prophets, ā€˜They will all be taught by God.ā€™ [2] Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46Ā I am not saying that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He is the one who has seen the Father. 47Ā Amen, Amen, I tell you: The one who believes in me [3] has eternal life.

48Ā ā€œI am the Bread of Life. 49Ā Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50Ā This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat it and not die. 51Ā I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.ā€

52Ā At that, the Jews argued among themselves, ā€œHow can this man give us his [4] flesh to eat?ā€

53Ā So Jesus said to them, ā€œAmen, Amen, I tell you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. 54Ā The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the Last Day. 55Ā For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. 56Ā The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57Ā Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58Ā This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like your [5] fathers ate and died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.ā€

59Ā He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. 60Ā When they heard it, many of his disciples said, ā€œThis is a hard teaching! Who can listen to it?ā€

61Ā But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, asked them, ā€œDoes this cause you to stumble in your faith? 62Ā What if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63Ā The Spirit is the one who gives life. The flesh does not help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64Ā But there are some of you who do not believe.ā€ For Jesus knew from the beginning those who would not believe and the one who would betray him. 65Ā He said, ā€œThis is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is given to him by my Father.ā€

66Ā After this, many of his disciples turned back and were not walking with him anymore. 67Ā So Jesus asked the Twelve, ā€œYou do not want to leave too, do you?ā€

68Ā Simon Peter answered him, ā€œLord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69Ā We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.ā€ [6]

70Ā Jesus answered them, ā€œDid I not choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!ā€ 71Ā He meant Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, because Judas was going to betray Jesus.
