Mark 11
The Withered Fig Tree
20Ā As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered down to the roots. 21Ā Peter remembered and said, āRabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.ā
22Ā Jesus replied, āHave faith in God. 23Ā Amen I tell you: Whoever says to this mountain, āBe lifted up and thrown into the sea,ā and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24Ā Therefore I tell you, everything that you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25Ā Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. 26Ā But if you do not forgive, your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins.ā [1]
Jesusā Authority Is Questioned
27Ā They went into Jerusalem again. As he was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the experts in the law, and the elders came to him. 28Ā They asked him, āBy what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?ā
29Ā Jesus replied, āI will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30Ā The baptism of Johnāwas it from heaven or from men? Answer me.ā
31Ā They discussed this with one another, saying, āIf we say, āFrom heaven,ā he will say, āThen why did you not believe him?ā 32Ā But if we say, āFrom menā.Ā .Ā .Ā .ā (They feared the crowd, because everybody held that John really was a prophet.) 33Ā So they answered Jesus, āWe donāt know.ā
Jesus said to them, āNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.ā
