Christians Answer Doubt With Faith – August 9, 2026
One key truth: Christians will doubt. And we won’t let doubt win. We face doubt with God’s everlasting promises. We trust God even when we are doubtful.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:28-39
Christians Answer Doubt With Faith
When was the last time you doubted God?
Notice that the title of this devotion is not “Christians Never Doubt God.” That is simply a lie. All believers doubt. Read the Psalms. They are full of questions and doubts. Where is God? Why doesn’t he answer? Why does he seem so far away? Abraham questioned God at times. Moses wasn’t always sure. Jesus’ disciples certainly doubted Jesus.
It can be freeing to realize you’re not the only one who struggles with doubting God at times.
And, while the specific details differ for each person on what causes them to doubt, there are some common themes: Suffering, difficulties, things not going to plan. We face tough circumstances and question if God cares, if he will provide what I need, and if I can really trust what he says.
Where Christians stand out is how we handle doubt.
First off, while we admit we doubt, we call it what it is: A temporary state that I want to repent of and move away from. I don’t want to stay stuck in doubt.
Instead of running away from God or just trying not to think about our doubts, God instructs us to think even more deeply. To really dive into what his Word tells us. To take the Lord’s Supper especially when our faith is weak.
In Romans 8 Paul is doing just that. He’s diving into the realities of what being connected to God means for us and our doubt.
Did something really bad just happen to you? Paul reminds us all things work for the eternal good of those who love God. Are you questioning if you really belong? Paul tells you that you’ve been chosen by God from eternity and that you are already called, justified, and glorified.
Are you feeling like the world is against you and is condemning you? Paul encourages you. If God is for you, it doesn’t matter even if the whole world is against you. No one can condemn another besides God. And he doesn’t condemn you!
Paul then lists some of the biggest culprits for causing us doubt: death, demons, Satan, hopelessness in the present, fear of the future, abuse of power, and feeling distant from God.
The truth? None of those things can actually separate us from the love of God. Why not? Because if God did not spare his most precious thing, his very own Son, and instead gave his Son to us and for us, then we can rest assured he loves us more than we can possibly imagine. We already have his love because we already have Jesus! We have his mercy. His forgiveness. His righteousness. His power. His love. His grace. His friendship.
So, be honest about your doubts. Don’t hide them. Face them. Admit them. Bring them to God. Run to his Word. Run to his promises. Run to the Lord’s Supper. It’s there that God strengthens you, calms your heart, fills your soul and empowers you to face another day.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to try to hide my doubts about you. I want to be honest with you about my doubts. Life is very hard. What I am facing is very hard. And sometimes I question if you really care, if you really have a plan, or if I can really trust you. And yet, even when I doubt you, you don’t turn away from me! I don’t want to stay stuck in my doubt! And you don’t want that for me either. You pull me close. You remind me how you’ve already proven your commitment to me in Jesus. You whisper your promises to me again. And the more I think about what you promise me, the more I’m strengthened in my faith. Thank you for reminding me that nothing can separate me from your love. Amen.
