Do You Trust God to Provide? – August 2, 2026
One key truth: Because God has already provided all that I need, I can trust him to provide everything I truly need.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Matthew 14:13-21
Do You Trust God to Provide?
Have you ever looked at a situation and immediately thought, “There’s no way this is going to work”?
Maybe you’ve studied for a test but still don’t feel ready. Maybe your bank account is empty, your schedule is packed, your team is counting on you, or you feel like everyone else has life figured out except you. Sometimes it feels like you’re running out of something—time, energy, confidence, friends, patience, or money.
What is your first response when you feel like you don’t have enough?
Do you start worrying? Do you immediately jump into problem-solving mode? Do you just pretend everything is fine? Or do you simply let yourself feel overwhelmed?
The disciples knew exactly what that feeling was like. The crowds had gathered to hear Jesus. Evening was coming. Thousands of hungry people were standing in the middle of nowhere. From the disciples’ perspective, they were running out of daylight and options.
So they came up with a plan—“Send the people home so they can find food.” Honestly, not a bad plan. But Jesus had another plan. He simply said “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
What?! Did Jesus really expect them to produce enough food for 5,000 people? With what food?! Their answer came quickly: “We only have five loaves of bread and two fish,” they said. But they were wrong. They forgot something they had. Or rather, someone. They looked at what they lacked instead of who was standing right beside them. Yes, on their own, they did not have the ability to feed all the people. But they were not on their own. Jesus was with them. And he has the ability to always provide.
When you feel like you don’t have enough, you might actually be right—you don’t have enough by yourself. But like the disciples, you are not alone. Jesus is with you. He’s the one who taught us to pray “Give us today our daily bread.” Every prayer for daily bread reminds us that we are completely dependent on our heavenly Father. There’s something else the disciples overlooked. The five loaves and two fish they already had were provided by God. Everything they possessed had first come from him. The same is true for you. Your abilities. Your family. Your health. Your food. Your home. If God has already cared for you every single day of your life, why would he suddenly stop now?
And when those worries still creep in, remember what God says in Romans: “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” If God was willing to give you Jesus—his own Son—to rescue you from sin, death, and hell, do you really think he’s going to forget about tomorrow’s lunch, your future, or the things he knows you truly need?
The cross is God’s greatest proof that he can always be trusted. And the God who gave us his very best will never stop caring for his children.
Prayer:
Lord, help me open my eyes to all that you’ve already given me. Everything I have is a gift from you! You’ve kept me alive, fed, clothed, and cared for me since the day of my birth. You’ve given me Jesus, who took care of my biggest spiritual needs. Teach me to come to you first instead of trying to carry every burden by myself. Give me today my daily bread, and give me a heart that trusts you every single day. Amen.
