Faith Under Pressure – June 21, 2026
One key truth: Preach the Word with patience and care.
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourageāwith great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
2 Timothy 4:1-5
Faith Under Pressure
Shelby honestly didnāt want to go to work that week. The kitchen was already miserable enough with the nonstop heat from the fryers, but lately the real heat had been coming from the conversations. Almost every shift turned into some kind of argument about God, religion, or what people believed.
Kal kept saying, āIf God is real, why is there so much evil in the world?ā Oliver jumped in with, āScience already proved evolution happened over billions of years.ā Tina got frustrated and called them out for not believing in God. But then Harley fired back, āYou say you believe in God, but you still call yourself bisexual.ā That only made things worse because the others reminded Harley about the parties sheād been going to and the drinking and smoking sheād been doing on weekends.
And there was Shelby. Standing there in the middle of the chaos holding a basket of fries, wondering, āWhat am I even supposed to say right now?ā
Paulās words in his second letter to Timothy are perfect for situations like this. Timothy was young too. He was a pastor committed to doing the work of the Lord. But that didnāt mean ministry was easy. Some people looked down on him because of his age. There were problems with leaders and drama with people who were up to nothing and up to no good. Others argued against Godās truth and were spreading false teachings and lies.
What was young Timothy supposed to do? What was Shelby supposed to do? What are you supposed to do when conversations about God get tense at school, online, on your team, or at work?
Paul gives a simple answer, āPreach the word; be prepared in season and out of season.ā In other words, do the work God has givenākeep speaking Godās truth. Be ready āin season and out of seasonāāwhen we are ready for it and when we are not ready; when people want to listen and when they donāt; when itās convenient and when itās not convenient. Sometimes it means talking about Jesus during a deep conversation late at night. Sometimes it means speaking up while scooping fries at work.
Paul also reminds us that sharing Godās truth takes wisdom. Sometimes people need correction. Sometimes they need warning. Sometimes they need encouragement and comfort. But no matter what, Paul says to speak with āgreat patience and careful instruction.ā Itās going to take a lot of love and patience because arguments rarely change hearts. Godās Word does.
The world is always going to have confusing opinions about truth, identity, right and wrong, and God himself. None of this surprises God. He already warned us it would happen. So donāt panic. Donāt lose your head. Donāt give up. Like Timothy. Like Shelby. Like you. Hang in there!
Stay patient. Keep loving people. Keep speaking the truth. Keep your head in all situations. And trust that Godās Word is powerful enough to work in peopleās heartsābecause he promises he will!
Prayer:
Jesus, you are the Lord of the Church, but sometimes it feels hard to talk about you when people disagree, argue, or make fun of what Christian believe. Help me to be patient andāto know when to listen, when to speak, and what to say. Give me the faith to trust that the Holy Spirit will bless the words I speak even when conversations get messy or uncomfortable. Let me always be a witness for you! Amen.
