Exactly What I Need: Water – March 8, 2026

One key truth: Jesus offers living water to everyone—no matter their past—and that life becomes ours through faith in him.

Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty ever again. Rather, the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water, bubbling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14 EHV

Exactly What I Need: Water

You’re sweating like crazy after working hard in the hot summer sun. Your shirt is sticking to you. Your head is pounding. You worked hard for your paycheck, and you’re already thinking about how you’ll spend it. But honestly? In that moment, the best thing in the world isn’t money—it’s that ice-cold water waiting in your bottle. That first gulp? Instant relief. Splashing some on your face? Even better. Water doesn’t just taste good—you need it to live.

The woman at the well in John 4 didn’t realize how bone-dry and empty her life really was until Jesus pointed it out. She came to get regular water. That’s all she was thinking about. But Jesus saw something deeper. He saw her spiritual thirst. She wasn’t just physically thirsty. She was spiritually empty. And that kind of thirst doesn’t just make you uncomfortable—it leads to eternal death.

Jesus doesn’t expose her thirst to shame her. He exposes it so he can satisfy it. He offers her something better than well water. He offers her living water—forgiveness, grace, and eternal life.

And he says the same thing to you. Maybe you’ve felt spiritually parched before. Maybe your faith has felt like a routine. Maybe you’ve tried to “fix” it by trying harder, doing better, promising more—and it still feels empty. Trying harder doesn’t quench spiritual thirst. Jesus does. You’re not the only one who’s felt that way. Every Christian goes through dry seasons.

But just like Jesus went out of his way to meet that woman at the well, he comes looking for you too. Through his Word. Through Baptism. Through the Lord’s Supper. Through people who remind you of his promises.

God loves you deeply. He doesn’t want you running on empty. So don’t just sip his grace once in a while. Drink deeply. Come back often. Let his forgiveness soak into your heart. Because his living water doesn’t just refresh you for a moment—it gives you life that never runs out.

Prayer:

Lord, when our hearts feel dry and empty, remind us that you are exactly what we need. Forgive us for trying to satisfy ourselves with things that never last. Fill us again with your living water and love. Keep us close to you. Amen.
