Christians Answer Doubt with Faith
“You mean he actually WANTED to die for me?”
During one of my first years of teaching four-year-olds, I had just finished telling of how Jesus could have used his almighty power to get down off the cross if he wanted to, but he chose not to because he loved us so much. As I was scanning the class, I noticed a little girl with tears in her eyes, mouth wide open. I asked what was wrong and she replied, “You mean Jesus actually wanted to die for me?”
This young girl may have been hearing the message of Jesus for the very first time in her short life. She found it hard to believe that someone would want to die for another person. I assured her that, yes, Jesus wanted to die for her because he loves her so much and wants her to be in heaven with him some day. Then I reassured her that no one could ever take that away from her. No one could ever take Jesus out of her heart.
How often do we doubt God’s love for us? How often do we remind ourselves of what goes on in the deepest parts of our hearts and think, “How could God still love me and want me in heaven?” Satan wants you to doubt God’s love. Satan wants you to doubt that God could ever love a sinner like you. Satan wants you to believe that there are powers that can snatch you out of God’s hand forever.
When doubts flood your mind and you wonder how God can still love you, remember Jesus’ words in John 10:28, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”
Jesus already died on the cross and rose victoriously. No one can ever change that. You are already forgiven of all sins, past and future. No one can ever change that. You already have a place waiting for you in heaven. No one can ever take that away from you. When you find yourself, like that four-year-old, asking “You mean Jesus actually wanted to die for me?”, then reread the words in Romans, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, when I dwell on my shortcomings and doubt that someone could love a sinner such as I, remind me that I am already forgiven and that salvation is already mine. Remind me that no one can snatch me out of your hand. Amen.
