Using The Foundation to reach the unchurched

The Foundation, a free worship planning resource developed and offered by WELS Congregational Services, is designed to assist congregations with outreach in their communities.

By using the pre-planned worship resources, busy pastors will have more time to spend visiting prospective members and interacting with their communities.

The worship plans have also been carefully constructed to be accessible to first-time guests. The orders of service and hymns, while feeding the faithful, will also bless those new to Lutheran worship.

ā€œPerhaps most importantly, it is hoped The Foundation resources will encourage members to invite their unchurched friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join them for worship. The use of themes for worship series might mean a member brings someone who is struggling with a particular issue in their life or who may have expressed interest in a topic that will be discussed in an upcoming series,ā€ says Rev. Eric Roecker, administrator for WELS Commission on Evangelism, part of WELS Congregational Services.

To assist with this outreach, a promotional video is produced for each series. The videos are specifically produced with the unchurched in mind, using language, images, music, etc., that unchurched people could understand and relate to. Roecker suggests some ways the videos might be used:

  • Show the video for an upcoming series after worship for two to three weeks prior to the start of the series. Not only will it prepare your people, but it might also make them think of someone they could invite to join them.
  • In certain settings, the video could be shown as an introduction to the sermon each week. This repetition would help tie the series together in the minds of worshipers.
  • Post the videos on all of your congregationā€™s social media pages. You never know who might see it and be intrigued enough to join you.
  • Share the videos with your members in the weeks leading up to each series so they can share them with unchurched acquaintances. Itā€™s an easy way for them to make the invite.

Building a congregationā€™s outreach culture

The Commission on Evangelism has developed a new program called Everyone Outreach to help focus congregations and their members on Jesusā€™ command to make disciples.

ā€œIf you look at WELS churches that are growing, the main ingredient is that they have an outreach culture,ā€ says Rev. Eric Roecker, director of WELS Evangelism. ā€œThe idea of this program is to create that culture so that every member and every ministry are focused on reaching the lost. Then it becomes clear that outreach is not an afterthought or something the evangelism committee does. It is who we are and what we do.ā€

This personal witnessing mindset is important in post-Christian America. ā€œPeople who arenā€™t interested in Christianity in any way arenā€™t going to be reached by corporate outreach for the most part,ā€ says Roecker. ā€œItā€™s going to take each of us showing love to our unchurched friends and neighbors and then looking for opportunities to lead them to the gospel.ā€

Roecker is quick to point out that Everyone Outreach is not going to train people how to do outreach. Instead it is designed to help a congregation discover its thought habits and develop new thinking and behaviors that build a culture of outreach.

The program begins with a two-day workshop at the congregation, where facilitators will use group exercises and reflection, grounded in Godā€™s Word, to explore and adjust the congregationā€™s culture.

But it isnā€™t just a one-and-done experience for the congregation. Attendees will leave with an outreach partner and their own personal commitment statements for accountability and encouragement. The program also will provide ongoing support through e-mails, text messages, meeting starters, and sermon thoughts, which will reinforce the changes that were discussed in the workshop.

The commission has worked closely with Mr. Kurt Nitz, a lay member at Christ Our Savior, Rockford, Mich., and an expert on culture transformations, to put together the program. This spring, 40 pastors will be trained to facilitate the workshops, with the plan to start offering workshops to congregations this fall.

Easter outreach program available

Victorious!

Itā€™s a message that the world needs to hear today.

ā€œMany people in our country feel defeated by life. Many are being defeated by disease. All will eventually be defeated by death,ā€ says Rev. Eric Roecker, director of the Commission on Evangelism.

Thatā€™s why the theme ā€œVictoriousā€ is so fitting for a new outreach program to invite unchurched souls to worship at WELS congregations this Easter. ā€œEaster changes all of that. Because Jesus was victorious over death when he rose from the grave, those who follow him are already victorious knowing that their sin has been forgiven,ā€ continues Roecker. ā€œWhatā€™s more, even though they may die one day, Jesus promises to raise them from the grave and give them eternal life. His victory is our victory.ā€

WELS Congregational Services is providing resources for this synodwide program called Easter 20, or E20. ā€œOutreach programs like E20 provide ready-made materials for congregations to use so that they do not need to create their own from scratch. This can save both time and money,ā€ says Roecker. ā€œAdditionally, having a themed approach ties everything togetherā€”from postcards to door hangers to business card invites to social media ads.ā€ Provided worship plans, service folder designs, and sermon thoughts then help tie that theme into an Easter festival service.

According to Roecker, studies show that Easter services are one of three worship services that unchurched people are most likely to attend. Thatā€™s why itā€™s so important for congregationsā€”and individual membersā€”to extend the invitation to worship. ā€œPeople are especially likely to attend if invited by an acquaintance,ā€ he says.

Most of the E20 materials are offered as free online downloads, with minimal costs for ordering postcards, business cards, and door hangers. Helpful ā€œhow-tosā€ provide direction for implementing this outreach program successfully.

A new voice for WELS Daily Devotions

Starting March 3, the audio version of the WELS Daily Devotions features a new voice: Zach Steinke. Steinke is a senior at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wis., with prior experience in the radio communications industry.

ā€œWe are thrilled to have Zach as our new narrator for the WELS Daily Devotions,ā€ says Rev. Eric Roecker, director of the WELS Commission on Evangelism. ā€œHis experience and expertise will be a blessing to the thousands of souls who listen each day.ā€

Narrating the Daily Devotions was an unexpected opportunity for Steinke. Rev. Donn Dobberstein, director of the WELS Commission on Discipleship, was teaching one of Steinkeā€™s classes recently and mentioned that they were seeking a new narrator for the Daily Devotions. Dobberstein asked the students to take turns reading portions of some devotional material, and Steinkeā€™s abilities captured Dobbersteinā€™s attention.

ā€œWhen it was my turn, I read my paragraph,ā€ Steinke recalls. ā€œThen Pastor Dobberstein asked me to read the next one . . . and the next one.ā€

Afterward, Steinke shared his voice demos with Dobberstein and other WELS staff, eventually meeting with them to discuss the opportunity. He was quickly brought on board.

ā€œI was not planning to audition myself as a candidate, and Pastor Dobberstein was not necessarily looking for a ā€˜voiceā€™ from the classroom that day,ā€ Steinke explains. ā€œHowever, the Lord brought this all together, so to him be the glory.ā€

Steinke replaces Rev. Mike Hintz, retired director for the WELS Commission on Evangelism. Coincidentally, Hintz was once his pastor. Steinke sees this connection as another example of Godā€™s hand in shaping this opportunity.

ā€œIt just shows you that this is something only the Lord can plan and work out,ā€ Steinke says. ā€œI am surprised and honored to be succeeding Pastor Hintz.ā€

In 2018, the Daily Devotions had nearly 11,000 subscribers in more than 15 different countries. Thousands of listeners tune in each day.

ā€œThe Lord has already blessed this ministry exponentially,ā€ Steinke notes. ā€œI pray that Iā€™ll be a good steward of this ministry and that God continues to make it fruitful through me and the many writers of the Daily Devotions.ā€

Steinke expresses gratitude for being able to share the gospel in this unique way. For listeners of the Daily Devotions, he shares this message: ā€œAs you incorporate these devotions into your day, may the Holy Spirit strengthen your faith as God speaks his gospel comfort to your heart. Iā€™d also like to challenge you to think of people in your life who need to know such comfort. Share these devotions with them so they can know Jesus, their Savior, and how precious they are in his sight.ā€
