Matthew 17

Jesus Heals a Boy With a Demon

14Ā When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt in front of him.Ā 15Ā ā€œLord,ā€ he said, ā€œhave mercy on my son because he has seizures and is suffering terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.Ā 16Ā I brought him to your disciples, but they were not able to cure him.ā€

17Ā Jesus answered, ā€œO unbelieving and perverse generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.ā€Ā 18Ā Jesus rebuked the demon, and it went out of the boy, and he was cured from that hour.

19Ā Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ā€œWhy were we unable to drive it out?ā€

20Ā He said to them, ā€œBecause of your little faith. [1]Ā Amen I tell you: If you have faith like a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ā€˜Move from here to there,ā€™ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.Ā 21Ā But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.ā€ [2]

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection Again

22Ā While they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ā€œThe Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.Ā 23Ā They will kill him, but on the third day he will be raised.ā€ And they were greatly distressed.

A Coin in a Fishā€™s Mouth

24Ā When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the temple tax [3]Ā came to Peter and said, ā€œDoesnā€™t your teacher pay the temple tax?ā€Ā 25Ā He said, ā€œYes.ā€

When he came into the house, Jesus spoke first, ā€œWhat do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or a tax? From their own sons or from others?ā€

26Ā Peter said to him, ā€œFrom others.ā€

Jesus said to him, ā€œThen the sons are exempt.Ā 27Ā But, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish that you pull up. When you open its mouth, you will find a silver coin. [4]Ā Take that coin and give it to them for me and for you.ā€
