Matthew 13:53 – 14:12 (EHV)
Matthew 13
53Ā When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place.
A Prophet Without Honor
54Ā Jesus entered his hometown and taught in their synagogue. As a result, the people were amazed and said, āWhere did this fellow get this wisdom and these miracles?Ā 55Ā Isnāt this the carpenterās son? Isnāt his mother named Mary? And arenāt James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas his brothers?Ā 56Ā And arenāt all of his sisters here with us? Where then did this fellow get all of these things?āĀ 57Ā And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, āA prophet is not without honor, except in his own hometown and in his own house.āĀ 58Ā He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
Matthew 14
Recalling the Death of John the Baptist
1Ā At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.Ā 2Ā He said to his servants, āThis is John the Baptist! He has risen from the dead! That is why these powers are working in him.āĀ 3Ā For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.Ā 4Ā John had been telling him, āIt is not lawful for you to have her.āĀ 5Ā Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded him as a prophet.Ā 6Ā But when it was Herodās birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced among them. This pleased Herod.Ā 7Ā So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.Ā 8Ā Prompted by her mother, she said, āGive me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.ā
9Ā Although this saddened the king, because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that it be done.Ā 10Ā He sent the order and had John beheaded in prison.Ā 11Ā His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.Ā 12Ā Johnās disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and reported this to Jesus.
