Matthew 27:15-31
Matthew 27
Barabbas or Jesus?
15Ā At the time of the Festival the governor had a custom to release to the crowd any one prisoner they wanted. 16Ā At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas. 17Ā So when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, āWhich one do you want me to release to you? Barabbasāor Jesus, who is called Christ?ā 18Ā For Pilate knew that they had handed Jesus over to him because of envy.
19Ā While he was sitting on the judgment seat, Pilateās wife sent him a message. āHave nothing to do with that righteous man,ā she said, āsince I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.ā 20Ā But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death. 21Ā The governor asked them, āWhich of the two do you want me to release to you?ā
āBarabbas!ā they said.
22Ā Pilate said to them, āThen what should I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?ā
They all said to him, āCrucify him!ā
23Ā But the governor said, āWhy? What has he done wrong?ā
But they kept shouting even louder: āCrucify him!ā
24Ā When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing and that instead it was turning into a riot, he took water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, āI am innocent of this righteous manās blood. It is your responsibility.ā
25Ā And all the people answered, āLet his blood be on us and on our children!ā
26Ā Then he released Barabbas to them, but he had Jesus flogged and handed him over to be crucified.
Soldiers Mock Jesus
27Ā Then the governorās soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole cohort [1] of soldiers around him. 28Ā They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. 29Ā They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, knelt in front of him, and mocked him by saying, āHail, King of the Jews!ā 30Ā They spit on him, took the staff, and hit him repeatedly on his head.
The Crucifixion
31Ā After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
