Matthew 25

The Parable of the Talents

Ā ā€œYou see, the kingdom of heaven is like a man going on a journey. He called his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. 15Ā To one he gave five talents, [1] to another two talents, and to still another one talent, each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. 16Ā The servant who had received the five talents immediately put them to work and gained five more talents. 17Ā In the same way, the servant who had received the two talents gained two more. 18Ā But the servant who had received one talent went away, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.

Ā ā€œAfter a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20Ā The servant who received the five talents came and brought five more talents. He said, ā€˜Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have gained five more talents.’

Ā ā€œHis master said to him, ā€˜Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Ā ā€œThe servant who received the two talents came and said, ā€˜Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more talents.’

Ā ā€œHis master said to him, ā€˜Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Ā ā€œThen the servant who received one talent came and said, ā€˜Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter seed. 25Ā Since I was afraid, I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’

Ā ā€œHis master answered him, ā€˜You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter seed? 27Ā Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers so that when I came I would get my money back with interest. 28Ā Take the talent away from him and give it to the servant who has the ten talents. 29Ā Because everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 30Ā Throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Jesus Will Judge the World

Ā ā€œWhen the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Ā All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33Ā He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34Ā Then the King will say to those on his right, ā€˜Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35Ā For I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. 36Ā I was lacking clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.’

Ā ā€œThen the righteous will answer him, ā€˜Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? 38Ā When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or lacking clothes and clothe you? 39Ā When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

Ā ā€œThe King will answer them, ā€˜Amen I tell you: Just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.’

Ā ā€œThen he will say to those on his left, ā€˜Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire, which is prepared for the Devil and his angels. 42Ā For I was hungry and you did not give me food to eat. I was thirsty and you did not give me anything to drink. 43Ā I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, lacking clothes and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not take care of me.’

Ā ā€œThen they will also answer, ā€˜Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or lacking clothes or sick or in prison and did not serve you?’

Ā ā€œAt that time he will answer them, ā€˜Amen I tell you: Just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’ 46Ā And they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.ā€
