John 12

Death and Glory

20Ā Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Festival. 21Ā They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, ā€œSir, we want to see Jesus.ā€ 22Ā Philip went to tell Andrew. Andrew came with Philip and told Jesus.

23Ā Jesus answered them, ā€œThe time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Ā Amen, Amen, I tell you: Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it continues to be one kernel. But if it dies, it produces much grain. 25Ā Anyone who loves his life destroys it. And the one who hates his life in this world will hold on to it for eternal life. 26Ā If anyone serves me, let him follow me. And where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

27Ā ā€œNow my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? ā€˜Father, save me from this hour’? No, this is the reason I came to this hour. 28Ā Father, glorify your name!ā€

A voice came from heaven: ā€œI have glorified my name, and I will glorify it again.ā€

29Ā The crowd standing there heard it and said it thundered. Others said an angel talked to him. 30Ā Jesus answered, ā€œThis voice was not for my sake but for yours.

31Ā ā€œNow is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be thrown out. 32Ā And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.ā€ 33Ā He said this to indicate what kind of death he was going to die.

34Ā The crowd answered him, ā€œWe have heard from the Scriptures that the Christ will remain forever. So how can you say, ā€˜The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?ā€

35Ā Then Jesus told them, ā€œThe light will be with you just a little while longer. Keep on walking while you have the light, so that darkness does not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36Ā While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light.ā€

Jesus spoke these words, and then went away and was hidden from them.
