Congregations serve an important role in WELS’ ministry because they are the backbone that supports our shared gospel efforts. The “Christ through us” long-range strategic plan details goals that existing congregations can work toward and also encourages strategic church planting of new missions.
|
That’s why one of WELS Home Missions’ top priorities is to plant new churches in areas not served by a WELS church—bringing the gospel to communities where hope is needed most. This vision is coming to life through the 100 Missions in 10 Years initiative. In the first three years of the initiative, the WELS Board for Home Missions has approved 28 new mission starts.

Three members of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) leadership team recently traveled to Peru to meet with Missionary Elise Gross, director of Women’s Ministry for Academia Cristo. During their visit, they experienced life in Latin America—riding in moto taxis, connecting with missionaries and Academia Cristo students, visiting church planters, and worshiping alongside members of Iglesia Gracia de Dios in Pucallpa as the congregation celebrated its fourth anniversary.
