Jarrell is a rapidly growing town located 44 miles north of Austin in northern Williamson County. The county has seen its population surge from 426,000 in 2010 to 671,000 in 2022, with continued growth expected. For the past three years, Pastor Don Patterson has been working with a core group of 11, which began holding weekly worship in October 2024. The group has identified 90 prospects, many of whom they connected with by volunteering in the Jarrell Bible Community Food Pantry. The plan is to rent space for eight years before securing land and constructing a permanent church home.

The center of Madison is expected to grow by 200,000 in future years, with many residents seeking an urban lifestyle. A core group of 14 adults, familiar with the area, has been working together since 2022—meeting regularly for Bible study and ministry planning—and has also secured a rental space for worship and community activities. Twenty prospects have expressed a strong interest in learning more about this new mission. A new mission plant in the center of urban Madison would allow WELS to reach an entirely new demographic.

Home Missionary Jacob Ungemach was called to start a new home mission in Cincinnati, Ohio. This type of assignment comes with mixed feelings of both excitement and intimidation for him and his wife, Grace. As we plant 100 missions in 10 years, the Church Planter Network offers critical training, resources, and support to new home missionaries as they learn what it takes to start a new mission.

It has been 14 years since Hmong church leaders in Vietnam invited WELS to train their pastors in the truth of the gospel, and 7 years since the communist government in Vietnam invited WELS to build a theological education center in the capital city of Hanoi.
|
From the very beginning, we knew that the Lord had opened a door to reach the more than two million Hmong people who live in Vietnam and the surrounding countries. We also knew that this door could close at any time.

We have a goal to raise $20,000 to support WELS mission work at home and abroad as part of the Taste of Missions event this year, and we need your help. We have identified two specific projects you can support—musical assistance grants at home mission congregations and theological education workshops for Nuer Sudanese in Ethiopia—OR you can support the general Taste of Missions fund that will be split evenly between Home and World Missions at the end of June. No matter what you choose to support, you can help us reach our $20,000 Taste of Missions offering goal and make a difference in home and world mission fields!

In January 2025, three different groups of students from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (WLS), Mequon, Wis., went on trips as part of a special partnership with WELS Home Missions. These trips were an opportunity to help mission churches connect with more people, strengthen their presence in their communities, and develop clear ministry plans. At the same time, the trips gave WLS students a chance to learn what it takes to start a new church, work with and understand different communities, and grow their confidence in sharing the gospel. By mixing classroom lessons with hands-on experience, the students got to see what mission work is really like and build skills they’ll use when they become pastors.
