Unexpected discovery

Unexpected discovery

Have you ever reached into a pocket and discovered money you didn’t remember putting there? The discovery is completely unexpected—and delightful. That is how I felt after a recent trip to Uganda to visit the Confessional Lutheran Synod of Uganda (CLSU). At the end of March, I accompanied One Africa Team missionary, Ben Foxen, on a visit to Ibanda, located in the western hills of the country. Because it was my first time representing the WELS Commission on Inter-Church Relations (CICR), I wasn’t sure what to expect. In the end, the experience far exceeded anything I could have imagined.

Jon Bilitz, pastor at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel in Madison, Wis., and representative for the WELS Commission on Inter-Church Relations, reflects on this memorable experience and the lasting relationships formed.

Straight talk: Training and outreach

"Has World Missions become all about worker training? I hear this question pop up every so often, and honestly, I get why people ask it."

Rev. Larry Schlomer, World Missions administrator, shares his understanding and perspective on why people ask this question.

Moments with missionaries: Howard Mohlke

Missionaries Howie Mohlke and Jake Vilhauer recently traveled to Pointe-Noire, marking the first visit by WELS missionaries to this region. This mission is part of growing outreach to French-speaking communities across Africa. The Christians they met are deeply committed to the teachings of Scripture and grateful for the opportunity to connect and grow alongside fellow believers.

Please keep the work of the WELS One Africa Team in your prayers as they continue to share the gospel and build relationships in new areas throughout Africa.

New Start: Greeneville, Tenn.

Greeneville, Tenn., is a growing community positioned between the Johnson City/Kingsport/Bristol metro area and Knoxville. While the area reflects strong Bible Belt culture and openness to conversations about faith, currently no confessional Lutheran church serves the community. A committed core group, supported by nearby WELS congregations in Johnson City and Morristown, has been meeting regularly and actively engaging with the community. Greeneville represents an opportunity to establish a confessional Lutheran presence in a community where none currently exists.
