From a U.K. Baptist to a confessional Lutheran pastor

From a U.K. Baptist to a confessional Lutheran pastor

"In August 2010, my wife Caroline and I moved from Gloucester, England, to the east coast of the United States for a temporary work relocation. Having been active in our local Baptist church in England for more than 20 years, we naturally sought a Baptist church in the area. After attending services at Baptist and non-denominational churches nearby, we had a deep sense of unease and realized something fundamental was missing—but we weren’t sure what that might be."

Lawrence and Caroline McCatty completed Bible information class and eventually became members at Christ in Clarksville, Md. Returning to the U.K. in September 2015, they weren't sure they would find any WELS-affiliated churches, but God had plans in the works.

Read more from Lawrence about his journey from being an active Baptist member to a pastor-in-training for the mission in Wolverhampton, England.

Missions presentations at WELS Synod Convention

The 68th Biennial Convention of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod was held July 21–24, 2025, at Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minn. WELS Missions had many representatives attend Synod Convention and present updates:

World Missions

Wednesday morning’s presentations from the Commission on Inter-Church Relations (CICR) and the Board for World Missions echoed the sentiments shared in the opening devotion “to look upon a world of broken and lost souls with compassion.”

Delegates heard a presentation from Prof. James Danell, chairman of the Commission on Inter-Church Relations, as well as an update on WELS World Missions from Rev. Jonathan Schroeder, chairman of the Board for World Missions, and Rev. Larry Schlomer, World Missions administrator.

On Wednesday evening, delegates heard presentations from world missionaries, including:
  • Rev. Luis Acosta (Academia Cristo for Spanish ministry)
  • Dr. Erik Landwehr (Native American Missions)
  • Rev. Howard Mohlke (One Africa Team).

Home Missions

Rev. Jonathan Bourman from Saint Mark Mankato, Mankato, Minn., was one of four home missionaries who shared their ministries with delegates on Wednesday evening, detailing the unique blessings and challenges of sharing God’s Word in their particular locations throughout the United States. Additional home mission presentations were heard from:
  • Rev. Caleb Free, Risen Savior, Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
  • Rev. Mark Schroeder, Peace, Gilbert, Ariz.
  • Rev. Steven Prahl, Foundation, Peyton, Colo.
In WELS Home Missions, God is blessing the gospel seeds that these missionaries and their members are spreading. Since the 100 Missions in 10 Years initiative began, 21 new missions and 24 mission enhancements have been supported, leading to many new opportunities to spread the gospel throughout North America.
