No One Can Serve Two Masters – September 21, 2025
One key truth: You can’t serve both God and money. Be faithful with what God has given you, and let him—not wealth—be your true master.
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Luke 16:10-13
No One Can Serve Two Masters
If you were handed any amount of money right now—seriously, $50, $500, or even $5,000—what’s the first thing you’d buy in the next three days? Sneakers? The latest phone? Concert tickets? A car? A trip with friends?
Money can definitely buy stuff that brings fun and excitement. It can even make you feel important or valuable for a little while.
But think about it:
- Fashion fades fast.
- Phones are “old” the moment the new model drops.
- Cars lose value the second you drive them off the lot.
- Concerts end. Vacations end.
- That cool piece of art or poster? You’ll probably stop noticing it after a while.
So what happens next? You start looking for the next thing to buy, hoping it will keep you happy. Money isn’t bad—it’s actually a gift from God. But it can’t give you lasting worth.
Jesus says, “You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 16:13). Here’s a tough question:
Are you more like the Pharisees who loved money more than God?
- What do you give more attention to every day—your stuff, or God?
- How do you explain (or excuse) your choices?
What is the answer? Consider what Jesus says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much” (Luke 16:10).
Be trustworthy with what God has given you. Use your blessings—big or small—to serve him. Your sinful nature will whisper, “You need more to feel better.” But Jesus is the only “more” you need. With him, you know what you are getting: forgiveness, love, and eternal life.
Through the use of God’s Word, the Holy Spirit gives you the fruit of the Spirit and equips you with the armor of God to fight Satan and his lies. You have everything you need in Christ. Let him—not money—be your master.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to set my attention on you and not on the world and its evil desires. You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help me to remember that, rather than let other things rule my life. Amen.
