Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Lifehacks #4: Serve
Me first. My way. My turn. I have rights.
And we do. In our country we have the rights of citizens. As family members we have a voice about things in my family. As children of God we have the ear of the King and he listens to us. As children of God we are heirs of eternity and as such we are the richest on earth. We have rights.
But what about them? What about your fellow citizens? What about your brother or sister? What about your brothers and sisters in Christ? What about your fellow heirs? When do they get their turn?
That’s the way Jesus saw it. He had rights too. Along with God the Father and the Spirit he was the co-creator of the world. He possesses all power and rule. All creation rightly bows before him. But he gave up his rights. He gave up his glory. He put all those aside for you, for them. He gave up everything for you, for them. He gave it all up so that we might have new rights, rights of sons and daughters.
He gave us the rights of children of God so that we can give those rights away for them. Them first. Their way. Their turn. They have rights. And we’re on the lookout all day every day to do what’s best for them.
That’s the secret code. Jesus gave his rights away to give us the rights of sons and daughters. We give our rights away to do what’s best for them. Their turn.
Lord Jesus, I can hardly understand what you gave up for me. You gave up everything that was yours by divine right so that you might give me rights as your child, an heir. Help me give up my rights and do what is best for other people in my life. Help me give up my rights so that they might know you. Amen.
