One mission – endless opportunities

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“One Mission – Endless Opportunities” is a slogan we use in Admissions at Martin Luther College (MLC). What does this mean?

This past fall we welcomed another outstanding new class of students to MLC. It is always exciting to see this gathering of young Christians who have been moved by the love of their Lord to train for public ministry. Before reaching this point they had two practical questions to think about regarding attending MLC: “What is my opportunity and how am I going to pay for it?”

Regarding student opportunities, MLC is different than most colleges in that our only mission is to produce workers for the church. However, this single, focused mission opens up endless opportunities for Christian leaders to proclaim Jesus, including preaching, teaching, and serving at churches and schools in a variety of situations around the world.

“How am I going to pay for college?” is the question you can help answer. Competition for college students is fierce. Both public and private institutions can reach the best and brightest of our WELS high school students with large scholarships and grants through huge endowments. This aid can prove difficult for our young men and women to turn down, not because they do not have a passion for ministry or considering ministry, but because they feel a responsibility to seriously consider the financial aid. In some cases, that aid can reach 50 percent or more of an average student’s tuition. At this point MLC cannot compete with such financial aid offerings.

This is where you come in. Your gifts to help increase financial aid at MLC will allow our young leaders the chance to consider ministry where they might otherwise take the more aggressive financial aid packages from other schools.

I know that sounds simplistic, but this point is very true for the typical high school student: a small increase in financial aid of $1,000-$5,000 will allow students and their families to focus on what is important—“Can I serve my Lord in ministry?”—rather than on the comparison of college costs.

Last thing, to let you know how important this opportunity is, think about this. Once we have our students on campus at MLC, we seldom lose them! Our retention rates at MLC are some of the BEST IN THE COUNTRY! This makes it even more imperative that we guide our young leaders in high school to our campus and encourage them in considering ministry!

Thank you for contemplating a gift to WELS’ MLC Scholarship Fund. Your gift will make a difference in our young leaders’ lives and more importantly, to the one mission of MLC—developing ministers of the gospel for our church! I can think of no earthly gift more important than helping our young high school leaders consider MLC and ministry!

May God bless you!
