Majoring on the minors – Part 2

Joel: Deliverance for Godā€™s peopleĀ

Thomas Kock

Tears formed inĀ Josheā€™sĀ eyes as he overlooked the devastation. The locusts had eatenĀ everything!Ā  The two olive treesā€”his chief sourceĀ of the so-often-used olive oilĀ as wellĀ as aĀ critical food-sourceā€”were stripped bare.Ā Not only had the locusts devoured every leaf, theyā€™d even attacked the tree bark! The grain had been gnawed to the ground, and the grape vines had fared no better.Ā Ā

And it wasnā€™t justĀ Josheā€™sĀ property; the locusts had invaded the entire land.Ā Devastation was rampant! What would people eat? How could they survive?Ā

ā€œJosheā€ helps us to envision the situation when the book of Joel is written. A locust plague had devastated the land! Thousands, millions of locusts would eat voraciously and reproduce quickly. (There are even stories of clothing being eaten off peopleā€™s backs!) And, while itā€™s unclear, it seems as if an invading armyā€”of humansā€”isĀ on the way too,Ā bringing even more devastation. How would the people respond? How would the LordĀ respond?Ā

OurĀ devastationĀ

Lent reminds us that sin has devastated humanity. Selfishness, anger, timidity, greed, lust, fear, substance abuse, rebelliousnessā€”those things have devastated individuals, families, and nations! Only if you deny it will you claim to be untouched. Our headsĀ and heartsĀ contain devastatingly sinful thoughts and desires, earning us damnation.Ā Ā

How will we respond? Joel called to the Israelites:Ā ā€œDeclare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of theĀ LORDĀ your God, and cry out to the LORDā€Ā (1:14).Ā

Cry out to theĀ LordĀ for help in time of distress! For rescue! The Israelites desperately needed Godā€™s help both for their physical needs and for their spiritual needs. Our need is just as desperate.Ā Ā

And, God wants us to turn to him!Ā ā€œĀ ā€˜Even now,ā€™Ā declares theĀ LORD,Ā ā€˜return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourningā€™Ā ā€ (2:12).Ā

Godā€™s deliveranceĀ

The people seemed to listen! And how does God respond? ā€œThen theĀ LORDĀ was jealous for his land and took pity on his peopleā€Ā (2:18).Ā

God pitiedĀ his people! He then promisedĀ to restore their fortunes, replenishing the grain bins and the olive oil.Ā Josheā€™sĀ fortunesĀ wereĀ looking up! And in amazing grace GodĀ promised, ā€œThen you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORDĀ your God,Ā and that there is no other; neverĀ again will my people be shamedĀ (2:27).Ā

And yet it gets better.Ā Ā

ā€œI will pour out my Spirit on all people. . . .Ā And everyone who calls on the name of theĀ LORDĀ will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliveranceā€Ā (2:28,32).Ā

Deliverance! The message of Lent! You and I need deliverance; Jesus came to win deliverance for us!Ā Ā

And so when the finalĀ day of theĀ LordĀ comes?Ā ā€œTheĀ LORDĀ will be a refuge for his people, a strongholdĀ for the people of Israel (3:16).Ā
