Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma Update – Sept., 14, 2017

WELS Christian Aid and Relief continues to support the local efforts of our congregations in Texas, Florida and Antigua to offer aid and relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Over $65,000 has already been provided to help address immediate needs of the congregations and members affected by the hurricane and the flooding in Texas. Assessment of needs is underway in Florida and Antigua. A representative of WELS Christian Aid and Relief and District President Chuck Westra will meet with pastors in Florida early next week to determine needs and recovery opportunities. We have provided a relief trailer with volunteers and equipment to Pastor Dave Rosenbaum and his congregation, Redeemer, Merritt Island, Fla., and Pastor Dale Raether and his congregation, New Hope, West Melbourne, Fla., as they assist with cleanup efforts in their local communities.

A representative from WELS Christian Aid and Relief and District President Don Patterson met with Houston-area pastors and lay leaders on September 6 to assess the situation in their area. They have established a local committee to assess needs and coordinate relief opportunities. This may take some time as they work with FEMA and their insurance companies. They will share needs for money and manpower with WELS Christian Aid and Relief who will then assist them resources, tools, and volunteers as needed.

While out of state volunteers are not requested at this time for Florida or Texas, those who are interested in volunteering can sign up online, or contact Rev. Richard Warnecke, a WELS Christian Aid and Relief committee member, at 262-424-8792; When volunteers are requested, we will contact you.

Our congregations in Texas and Florida are not requesting that supplies or donated items be sent to them at this time. If you wish to support this relief effort, direct your financial gifts to WELS Christian Aid and Relief and designate the Hurricane Fund. To promote good coordination of efforts, please direct questions about hurricane relief to Warnecke or to Hein, 262-334-7881;, rather than to local Texas and Florida congregations.

Donate to Hurricane Harvey relief online at or by sending checks made payable to WELS. In the memo section of the check please note “hurricane relief” and send to WELS Center for Mission and Ministry, N16W23377 Stone Ridge Dr, Waukesha, WI 53188.

Thank you to everyone for their prayers and encouragement, your special gifts and offers to help. May our gracious Lord bless the recovery efforts!
