Hurricane Relief Update—Sept. 28, 2017
WELS Christian Aid and Relief continues to assist the local efforts of our brothers and sisters in Christ affected by the hurricanes in Texas and Florida.
Christian Aid and Relief is distributing immediate financial aid to members in need through District President Rev. Don Patterson in Texas and District President Rev. Chuck Westra in Florida.
In Texas, a relief subcommittee is determining needs and opportunities for recovery efforts in various areas of Houston. District President Rev. Don Patterson reports, “The people we are helping are moved to tears of thankfulness when they realize that their brothers and sisters in other parts of the country are sending money, goods, or helping hands without hesitation or need for recognition.”
In Florida, relief trailers are being put to good use by volunteers who are helping homeowners with cleanup efforts in various areas.
Recently, a plan was developed to offer assistance to families displaced from Barbuda who are staying with members and friends of our WELS congregation in St. John’s, Antigua. Twenty-nine families have received $18,000 in immediate aid so far.
Assessment of damage in Puerto Rico is ongoing and delayed because communications have been down. Rev. Tim Satorius, the Commission on Inter-Church Relations liaison to our sister church in Puerto Rico, is in contact with the church body’s three pastors to determine needs and opportunities to help. Christian Aid and Relief has granted $5,000 to Direct Relief to provide immediate relief to the people of Puerto Rico.
Thank you for your concern, your prayers, and your special gifts to those in need. May the Lord continue to bless our ongoing relief efforts.
