John 20

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11Ā But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she bent over, looking into the tomb. 12Ā She saw two angels in white clothes sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. 13Ā They asked her, ā€œWoman, why are you weeping?ā€

She told them, ā€œBecause they have taken away my Lord, and I donā€™t know where they have laid him.ā€

14Ā After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.

15Ā Jesus said to her, ā€œWoman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?ā€

Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, ā€œSir, if you carried him off, tell me where you laid him, and I will get him.ā€

16Ā Jesus said to her, ā€œMary.ā€

She turned and replied in Aramaic, ā€œRabboni!ā€ (which means, ā€œTeacherā€).

17Ā Jesus told her, ā€œDo not continue to cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ā€˜I am ascending to my Father and your Fatherā€”to my God and your God.ā€™ā€

18Ā Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ā€œI have seen the Lord!ā€ She also told them the things he said to her.

Behind Locked Doors

19Ā On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together behind locked doors because of their fear of the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, ā€œPeace be with you!ā€ 20Ā After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21Ā Jesus said to them again, ā€œPeace be with you! Just as the Father has sent me, I am also sending you.ā€ 22Ā After saying this, he breathed on them and said, ā€œReceive the Holy Spirit. 23Ā Whenever you forgive peopleā€™s sins, they are forgiven. Whenever you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.ā€

Thomas Finally Believes

24Ā But Thomas, one of the Twelve, the one called the Twin, [1] was not with them when Jesus came. 25Ā So the other disciples kept telling him, ā€œWe have seen the Lord!ā€

But he said to them, ā€œUnless I see the nail marks in his hands, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.ā€

26Ā After eight days, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. ā€œPeace be with you,ā€ he said. 27Ā Then he said to Thomas, ā€œPut your finger here and look at my hands. Take your hand and put it into my side. Do not continue to doubt, but believe.ā€

28Ā Thomas answered him, ā€œMy Lord and my God!ā€

29Ā Jesus said to him, ā€œBecause you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.ā€

The Purpose of Johnā€™s Gospel Account

30Ā Jesus, in the presence of his disciples, did many other miraculous signs that are not written in this book. 31Ā But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Footnotes

  1. John 20:24 Greek Didymus is the equivalent of Thomas in Hebrew/Aramaic, both meaning Twin.
