Prayer Time and Snooze Buttons
By Martin Spriggs:Bio on May 7, 2009
Sometimes I find interesting places where technology and faith intersect. I’ve learned that I need to discipline my prayer life in order to get the amount of time I would like in conversation with my Lord. In the car on the way to work is a good time for me. Also when I get to work I have subscribed to the daily prayer from WELS.net, so I can read that and jump off into my own ex corde prayer. Of course at meal times and other quiet times in the evening. But we all know how some of “those times” get crowded out.
Recently I’ve learned that the technology built in to the clock on my nightstand can help. Yes, it is a technologically advanced atomic clock. I never have to set the time. It syncs every night to that big atomic clock in the sky..actually it syncs with a clock in Colorado. But the rather low tech feature that is helping my prayer life is the snooze button. My snooze allows an additional 9 minutes of “wake up time.” Sometimes I hit it a few times, as I’m sure some of you non-morning people do. Lately I’ve taken to using the last 9 minutes before I get up for prayer time. It’s quiet at that time and I have no trouble filling 9 minutes first thing in the morning as I can pray through all the things ahead of me during the day, and pray about all those things that ran through my head overnight.
It’s wonderful how the Lord connects faith and seeming non-related technologies. Make good use of your “nine minutes.” If it’s an extremely busy day ahead “sleep in” a little more…maybe even 18 minutes.
