Your Story
By Martin Spriggs:Bio on August 15, 2008
I wanted to provide you an end-of-day post from the ECHO Church Media Conference I’m attending in Dallas this week. One of the keynotes tonight was talking about “story”. Essentially that the Bible is chock full of narratives that draw the reader in and tell God’s story and the story of God’s people over and over again in thrilling ways. There are many ways to tell the story of God’s love…through a look at the lives of people like Paul, or the early church or a Samaritan woman. Through a sermon, or a song, or a picture, or a life.
That truth was driven home over lunch today when I had a chance to speak with a Christian who had grown up a Mormon. His story of leaving the Mormon church at the cost of family and friends was thrilling. It was a present day story of God’s love. We all have stories of God’s love in our lives, and they are all thrilling, and they all end the same way…in heaven.
I was disappointed to miss the funeral of Franklin Zabell yesterday. He was a wonderful servant who worked faithfully within the synod for many years applying his musical talents. My wife was able to attend and told me it was “a wonderful funeral.” “A wonderful funeral” people might ask. Funerals are important parts of stories. They are the perfect ending. Every great story follows the same formula. They require a character who has a lofty goal (who wants something badly), but must overcome great conflict to reach it. Just test this theory next time you are in the theater. Every christian has a great story…thanks to Jesus’ story!
