    Is Your Website Working?

    By Martin Spriggs:Bio on June 4, 2008

An important question to ask when you are investing time and money in your church or school’s website is: “Is It Working?” I don’t mean does it come up when a visitor types in your web address. I mean are you getting the number of visitors you desire and once they are on your site are they finding the things you’d like them to find? After all, you don’t want to go through all the trouble of building and maintaining a website if people aren’t coming or if they do come they don’t stay or find the information they are looking for.

One tool that I’ve found very useful in uncovering how your website is doing is Google Analytics. It’s relatively simple to set up. Once you have it in place you can analyze all kinds of information about who your visitors are and what they are doing. If you’d like to learn a little bit more about this free service you may want to listen to the most recent WELSTech Podcast (Episode 22). Sallie Draper and I share our experiences with the tool and why congregations might want to use it.

Don’t waste your time on a site that isn’t meeting your needs. Find out if it is.

In fact Google has a lot of great products. Our recent endeavor into creating a website gave me the idea to use Google Apps. Church emails can be hosted by Google (with the familiar gmail engine) while still using your church’s domain name. You can even swap the Google logo for the WELS logo. More importantly the Google Calendar can be utilized and integrated into the church website.
