Love that Knows No Limits – March 7, 2016

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Love that Knows No Limits

“I don’t know if I can do it.” This was Frank’s response. His son had just come to him and confessed he had wrecked the car. Frank had told his son not to take it, but the order was ignored. While he was grateful his son avoided serious injury, the car wasn’t as fortunate. It was a total loss. Though his son pleaded for forgiveness, Frank struggled to find the words to do it.

The way Frank responded to his son is the way God should respond to me. I have ignored God’s clear warning, and disregarded his will for my life. God has every right to withhold his forgiveness. However, the harsh punishment I should have received is what God withheld. He did this because his love knows no limits.

It is through that limitless and undeserved love that he sent his one and only Son into this world. Jesus came as his Father commanded. He took on my humanity. He became my substitute. He even endured the just sentence I should have received.

It is nothing less than amazing that God the Father punished his own innocent Son for my disobedience, as well as the disobedience of every sinner. But that is exactly what he did. As a result by faith in Jesus I stand forgiven, and not only forgiven, I am also declared completely worthy of life in heaven.

What further shows the limitless nature of God’s love is the care he provides right now. By faith, I live with the assurance of his rich blessing. By faith, I live with the promise of his never-failing presence. In Jesus, I even find mercy when I have separated myself from him because of my sin.

Nothing brings greater joy than knowing the limitless love which God the Father has poured out on me. It is a love that longs for my return. It is a love that welcomes me back. It is a love that embraces me and tells me I am his.

Prayer:
O precious Lord, heavenly Father, it is because of your great and undeserved love that I can humbly come to you to seek forgiveness. For Jesus’ sake, cleanse me of my sins, and keep me yours now and forever. Amen.
